Mental illness is unseen and can be devastating. 20% of people in their lifetime will suffer from some form of mental illness, or depression. The stigma attached to mental illness, in spite of the number of people affected, is appalling.
As a society we have been conditioned to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps, encouraged to suck it up. This has to stop when it comes to depression and other forms of mental illness.
If you or someone you know is suffering inside for any reason, know that there are people out here who have been where you are. There is no shame in seeking help. There are countless people willing to listen.
Tell someone. Don’t keep it bottled up any more.
If you are unable to tell someone in person, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. There is someone there 24 hours a day, seven days a week, who can help.
